What if my Child Slips and Falls in Public?

May 20, 2020

Philadelphia Slip and Fall Lawyers discuss what to do if your child has a slip and fall accident in public. If your child slips and falls in public, you have every right to be concerned. Parents are likely accustomed to children falling because kids have quite a lot of energy, and they can be excitable. It is important to learn safety tips to understand what to do if your child slips and falls in public.

Understand Your Environment

Parents often work hard and do not get enough sleep, and parents must also manage their children in unpredictable public settings. As a parent, however, you must think about anything that could be problematic for your children as you go about your daily routine. You do not want to be constantly nervous, but you should be aware of certain things, such as:

  • Anything your children can climb
  • Anything your children can trip on
  • Anything that could cause your children to slip
  • Any stimuli that would cause your children to run away from you

A bit of diligence will go a long way when you are trying to prevent slip and fall injuries. You might also teach your children to:

  • Properly walk on slippery surfaces: Shuffling your feet helps prevent slipping.
  • Always wear shoes: Shoes give your kids more traction.
  • Look for obstacles or hazards on the ground: Teach your children to look out for anything that could cause them to slip and fall.

Take Immediate Action

When your child slips and falls badly, you should take immediate action. Any child that appears to have broken bones, swelling, or bruising should be seen by a doctor as soon as possible.

In extreme cases, you may need to call 911 for assistance. You should act quickly because nearly half a million emergency room visits for traumatic brain injuries are reported every year in children 14 years old and under. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

How to Help an Injured Child

If your child has hit their head after an accident, you should help them keep their head up. You want them to rest, but it is best if your child sits in a comfortable recliner or tall chair. If they are vomiting, experiencing intense headaches, or cannot focus, you should call 911 immediately. Back, neck, and spinal cord injuries may be hard to notice. Keep watch over the child for at least the next 24 hours and call for help if they begin to exhibit these symptoms.

If your child seems badly hurt, you should not hesitate to call 911. You will not be judged when you get to the hospital. Emergency room doctors and nurses see these injuries every day, and sometimes, the injuries cannot be avoided. Do what is best for your child to avoid aggravating the injury or letting the injury get worse before you realize something is wrong. If your child was injured due to negligent actions of another party, contact an experienced lawyer immediately.
