Philadelphia Personal Injury Lawyers Report: Teen Drivers and Summer Car Accidents

Philadelphia personal injury lawyers discuss teen drivers and summer car accidentsThroughout the United States, the summer months signify holiday fun, family vacations, and spending time with friends; however, statistics show car accidents caused by teen drivers dramatically increase from the end of May through the beginning of September.  The American Automobile Association (AAA) has coined this time of year as the “deadliest 100 days.”  A recent study by AAA confirms that between Memorial Day and Labor Day, there is an increased amount of deadly car accidents caused by teen drivers.

Moreover, the study shows teen drivers pose a greater risk to other drivers rather than themselves.  The study acknowledges that negligent driving behaviors such as distractive driving in the form of texting, drunk driving and drowsy driving, especially on prom nights, were responsible for injuring other drivers and their passengers on the road, not the teen driver as one may assume.  In 2013, for every one teen killed in a fatal car accident, two individuals died who were not the teen driver.

Raising Awareness for Sharing the Road with Teen Drivers

The summer is a time of freedom when teen drivers want to show off their new cars, while exerting a sense of autonomy which driving without parents encourages.  Unfortunately teens are among those at the greatest risk for car accidents. For this reason, safety advocates encourage parents to be informed of the risks and dangers their young drivers are facing, while at the same time ensure that they review the rules of the road with their teens.

AAA promotes its findings not only to raise awareness to parents of teen drivers, but to everyone who shares the road.  The goal is to keep teens safe during the “100 deadliest days,” as well as throughout the year.  Over the last 20 years, AAA studied teen drivers between the ages of 15 and 19.  The studies reveal some good news and show a 51% decrease in car accident injuries and a 56% decrease in car accident fatalities involving the young drivers since 1994.
