Head and Brain Injuries Result in Slip & Fall Accidents

March 16, 2020

TBI

Slip and fall accidents can cause a multitude of injuries, including broken hips, broken legs, shoulder injuries, and hand injuries. Among the most dangerous injuries are those involving the brain. Head injuries can also result in brain injuries that can cause lasting effects or could require surgery and many months to heal.  Head injures can even cause death at the time of the accident or shortly after. It is important to know what types of head injuries can happen as a result of a simple slip and fall accident.

Types of Head and Brain Injuries

Head and brain injuries are often severe. Some head and brain injuries that can happen in slip and fall accidents include:

  • Contusions: A contusion occurs when a bruise on the brain causes bleeding. This injury can occur from either a fall or being struck with an object, it can be minor to severe.
  • Hematomas: A hematoma happens when the outer blood vessels of the brain become damaged and causes a blood clot. The clot can put pressure on the tissue of the brain. If untreated, there can be a loss of function, depending on the location of the hematoma. This injury may also require surgery to remove the hematoma.
  • Closed-Head Injuries: Closed-head injuries occur when there is an impact to the brain, but the skull remains intact. With these injuries, swelling, torn blood vessels, bruised brain tissue, or pressure on the brain is common.
  • Concussions: A concussion can happen even if the head does not receive a blow. A concussion is when there is sudden movement that causes the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, which can sometimes stretch or damage brain cells. Concussions can range from mild to severe. Nevertheless, any damage to the brain can be serious and can have lasting effects.

Issues to Consider in Your Legal Case

If a victim experiences a slip and fall accident, there are multiple factors influencing their slip and fall claim against the property owner. Any legal case will be examined for whether there are multiple people liable for the accident, if the property owner is responsible, or if the victim played a role in the accident.
