Do Car Accidents Increase in the Week Following Daylight Saving Time?

March 15, 2021

Daylight Saving Time

Each spring, people across the United States have to move their clocks forward an hour for daylight saving time (DST). DST is an opportunity to get more light during the evening and less light during the morning, making days feel longer in preparation for summer. However, this abrupt change of time seemingly causes an increase in car accidents.

According to data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System that was published in Current Biology, DST is linked to a six percent increase in car accidents. The study analyzed 20 years of data and found that DST is responsible for around 28 deaths each year. More importantly, the study found that these accident rates often decreased after the week of DST. Additionally, there was virtually no impact during the time change in November.

The study from the study indicates that losing an hour of sleep can have a significant impact on the ability to make safe choices while behind the wheel. DST can cause many motorists to drive fatigued. This can ultimately lead to severe car accident injuries or even death. Also, the lack of light in the morning because of DST can impact safely. Drivers should practice extra caution while driving during the week of DST.

What Should I Do After a Motor Vehicle Accident?

Immediately after a car accident, a victim should ensure that they get medical attention. They should also collect any basic evidence that can help them secure their entitled compensation. Some evidence they can collect includes:

  • A copy of the police report.
  • The driver’s name and insurance.
  • Photographs of the vehicular damage and the scene of the accident.
  • The names and contact information of any witnesses.

Evidence can help a victim prevail in a legal case. After a car accident, the victim may suffer from both financial and emotional losses. The insurance company of the at-fault driver is responsible for covering these losses. However, many insurance companies fail to fairly compensate victims for their losses. A lawyer can help to ensure that a victim gets proper compensation for their injuries.
