Philadelphia Personal Injury Lawyers Provide Tips for Holiday Drivers

November 10, 2014

The holidays are right around the corner and the time for visiting with families and friends will soon be upon us.    With an increase in the number of cars on the road during this festive and busy time of the year, it becomes even more important to use extra caution when driving from place to place.  Preparing for holiday travel can help minimize the number of car accidents and injuries on the roads and highways.

It is important to make sure that vehicles are in good working order before embarking on a road trip.  Check the winter weather forecast and plan travel time, accordingly.  In the event of poor weather conditions, it is better to reschedule a trip than to risk an auto accident on snow-covered or icy roads.

Planning travel during off peak times, when fewer car are on the road, lessens the risk of a multi-car accident. Driving responsibly by obeying the speed limit and keeping a safe distance from other cars is another way to reduce the risk of accidents on slippery surfaces.  Allow other motor vehicles to pass and do not be concerned with keeping ahead of the traffic.

Do not engage in any type of distracted driving including using a cell phone or texting when driving.  Stay focused on the road when traveling on the busy roadways. Never drive while under the influence of alcohol. Appoint a designated driver or make plans to stay overnight if attending holiday celebrations that include alcohol.

Lastly, get ample rest before embarking on long holiday road trips. Drowsy driving can cause motorists to be less alert and aware while driving which increases the chance of being involved in a car crash.   Drivers who feel themselves becoming tired should pull off to the side of the road or into a rest area until they feel alert enough to drive safely. Taking a short walk is rejuvenating and rehydrate if necessary.  Plan to break up long road trips by spending the night in a hotel.  It is safer to be late than getting injured in a car accident.
